Turkish fishing villages

Thanks for all the lovely comments you made on my last post, it looks like everyone liked Bodrum :)

This week, I have more places to show you from Bodrum Peninsula, some typical fishing villages

View of the fishing village Guvercinlik from the Harbour

The day started in Lakeside Gardens, it was a sunny and lovely day as usual with the gardens on their bloom as you can see in the pictures, so I got busy doing photos of the flowers first thing in the morning, I can't help it :)

Not far from Lakeside Gardens, we have two villages that I am going to show you:

Boğaziçi  is home of our resort  Lakeside Gardens. During the holiday season, we have a free bus which goes from Lakeside resort  to this village, the bus is every two hours and everyday, so you can easily get to the supermarkets, cafes, bars and fish restaurants of Boğaziçi.

In ancient times this was the site of the ancient Carian city of Bargylia. Ruins of the ancient city of Bargylia, including a Roman temple can be seen scattered around the locality.

The best day to visit this village is on Sundays when they have a market with fruit and vegetables, olives, cheeses… Yes, everything that I love to make a delicious Turkish salad!

Before you buy cheese or olives, the salesmen give you lots of different types to try so you will know what you are buying, it isn’t necessary to haggle, they are fixed prices because these markets are mainly for the locals, I did not see many tourists there.

Bogazici becomes much busier at night when the fish restaurants that line the shoreline get full of people and lively. Any day during the week is good to come for dinner here.  As it is a fishing village, the main courses apart of typical Turkish dishes are fish: Jumbo king prawns, octopus salad, red mullets, calamari, sea bass… The size of the King prawns and red mullets are gigantic and the food here is delicious! The prices are not expensive at all as the exchange rates are really good at the moment.

A bit further is a bigger village Guvercinlik, 10 minutes drivig from Lakeside or just a bit longer taking the Dolmus bus ( it costs just about £1.00 )
We went driving from Lakeside hills to the motorway, the road is very twisty and not well looked after, it has a lot of character and it is very common to find this kind of roads when you go out from the motorway, from the road you  can see the lake with big birds if you look closely, you can also see chickens walking near the road, sometimes goats and this time a family of ducks decided to cross the road in front of our car, so we have to stop and let them happily, without any  hurry cross the road.

If you would like to see more pictures of the lake, I did a post about Tuzla lake a couple of months ago, here the link:

Guvercinlik is a  bigger village than Bogazici and they also have once a week market. This one is Mondays. There are a lot of resturaunts to choose from and a couple of nice bars/cafes. Also, when you have turned right if you go towards the end of the village you will come to a lovely stretch of beach with nice sunloungers.  Although most of the village is harbour. Most of the resturaunts/bars provide sunbeds/large bean bags and some have designated swimming areas with steps into/out of the sea.

I cant remember what I was doing in that moment but you can see the dress in this picture ;-)

There are a lot of lovely  restaurants in the harbour:

All the restaurants offer Turkish dishes, plenty of fish and seafood and they are much busier in the evening.

You find much less tourists in these villages than in the city and it is quite nice to spend the day between the locals.

Garden at Lakeside. I was wearing a dress from Primak (old, it was about £17.00), hat from Primak, sandals from Clarks, sunglasses from Pepe Jeans and the bag from Turkish markets, watch from Guess

Lovely detail on the back,   Primak dress

I hope you liked my post, I would love to hear your comments :)

Have a nice week!

Both villages look lovely, I would love to check out these food markets and try all the different cheeses!
Beautiful photos, too! I used to grow those bright pink flowers when I lived in Lebanon. I'm half Lebanese, and they only grow in warm climates like in the Mediterranean :) I LOVE the photo of the ducks crossing the road, too. Awesome post!
