Seville Cathedral and La Giralda

The Roman Catholic Seville Cathedral in Spain is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world.

After its completion in the early 16th century, the Seville Cathedral supplanted Hagia Sophia as the largest cathedral in the world, it is also the burial site of Christopher Columbus.

The Giralda is the bell tower of the Seville Cathedral in Spain.  It was originally built as a minaret during the Moorish period, with a Renaissance style top subsequently added by Spaniards. The Giralda was registered in 1987 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO along with the Alcazar and the General Archive of the Indies. The tower is 104.1 m (342 ft) in height and remains one of the most important symbols of the city, as it has been since medieval times.

To climb the Giralda, there are 35 ramps, wide enough for a horse to pass, in fact it seems that the person in charge of calling the prayer in the Arabic period did it like this, the climb is less tiring than going up other towers since it is not necessary to be climbing stairs and being winter was more bearable than climbing in the hot summer months, the ramps lead to the last 17 steps that place us in the visitable area of the monument where you can enjoy fantastic views from Seville.

We stayed in a lovely top apartment in the city centre where we had the impressive views of the Cathedral from the balconies and windows.

The Seville Cathedral is beautiful. I didn't realize how large it is. When I was there, I was so amazed by all the displays that I forgot to climb the tower.

I think I actually caught a glimpse of a documentary about this cathedral yesterday! What a coincidence. It is a beautiful cathedral indeed. The tower is so pretty...how interesting that it was once a minaret! Now I can't get that photo of someone climbing it on a horse out of my head.

Interesting how horses are often allowed into sacred areas, right? Perhaps because we view them as noble animals. I watched one documentary about some horse races in Italy (between cities or different neighbourhoods in the city, I'm not sure- in any case a group of people have a horse who is their champion and they root for him)...Anyway, they actually take the horse inside of the church. The priest blesses the horse- it's a tradition.

Tonight I saw one episode of one Spanish history show called Isabel- about queen Isabel. It seems interesting...but I usually don't have the discipline to watch a TV series...but it does seem like a lovely series, perhaps I should make an effort. Have you seen it?

You look lovely! I really like your bomber jacket.

Nuria Travelera said...

I haven't seen that serie but Queen Isabel The Catholic was the most important Spanish Queen of the history, it will be very interesting series to watch, I will need to look for them in Nexflix xxx
